Toothpaste for sensitive teeth

There is a range of toothpastes which are targeted at people with sensitive teeth. These toothpastes work by sealing channels or tubules within the dentin (the middle layer of a tooth) which run from the central nerve to the outside of the tooth.

These tubules react to hot and cold temperatures by triggering pain sensations in the teeth. These pain signals are what you know as sensitive teeth.

Brands of toothpaste for sensitive teeth

There are several brands to choose from which include:

  • Colgate
  • Arm & Hammer
  • Sensodyne
  • Oral B

These are leading brands of toothpaste in the UK.

The difference between normal toothpaste and those for sensitive teeth is the inclusion of an ingredient called potassium chloride. This compound reduces sensitivity by blocking tubules in the dentin which prevents the transmission of pain signals.

Apart from this substance this toothpaste contains the same ingredients as normal types of toothpaste.

Something to bear in mind when brushing your teeth: avoid using a toothbrush with very stiff bristles as this can damage the outer layer of the teeth which increases the risk of sensitive teeth.

Plus avoid over-enthusiastic use of a toothbrush as well. Brush your teeth using up and down actions and avoid brushing the gum line.
